Sharpening is an essential part of wood turning with out sharp tools you can not turn it is not a waste of tool steel to learn too grind and sharpen your tools freehand .By sharpening your tools freehand as you favour a particular angle or grind you will adjust your sharpening according to what suits you and your body.The advantage is no jigs to alter and adjust for each individual tool.Below is some video links on how to sharpen your tools.The order they are listed is as I was taught as it is sequential starting with easiest first and gradually more complexity is added.
