Windsor chair back sticks
Phil Jones professional wood turner based in the heart of rural Buckinghamshire has been turning Windsor chair back sticks for many years and has clients who are well known chair makers in the Windsor chair trade .Phil has a range of customers templates, which are used to make the sticks. They range from 18″ right up to 31″ in length and with varying diameters to as small as 3/8″ which is approximately 10mm.
The diameters of the sticks are regularly checked to keep the sticks consistent to the original pattern .Some patterns of sticks are made so that they will fit the seat ,the arm rail and the top bend of the chair, for these sticks there is usually a parallel section so that it can be cut down the to various lengths ,but at the same diameter.which simplifies the operation of drilling the holes in the bend for the back of the chair, for the chair makers.
The Windsor chair back sticks are usually made from Ash,but can be made from Oak,Maple and even Yew.The typical size of order for the sticks is 500 pieces or more.
If you send a sample of your stick a template would be made as per your pattern stick.Once the lathe is set a proof of the stick would be sent to you for approval ,this would be on the first order only. Many of his clients have been using him for numerous years below is a few examples of various sticks.
